Book - A Shot in the Dark - 73

Summary no. 73

As soon as Inspector Steine entered his office, Mrs Groynes composed herself, stood up and handed him the letter she had just finished writing. Of course she didn’t tell him that she had composed it. She needed the Inspector to believe that the letter had been genuinely written and sent—when still alive—by the late Jack Braithwaite. Otherwise, her wicked masterplan would’ve fallen apart in no time. As he took the letter, Steine experienced a sudden stab* of irritation. He wasn’t particulary up for surprises those days. However, it then came to him that the letter might have something to do with the ongoing investigation. The prospect of a breakthorugh thrilled him. He was so desperate to bring the case to an end that he didn’t pick up anything amiss in the letter—or he just pretended not to. Either way, he triumphantly announced to Mrs Groynes that they had finally found out who the culprit was. Mrs Groynes played along, pulling on a stunned face. Steine was quite a predictable and slow-witted man, but still Mrs Groynes was astonished by how easy it had all been.

*Can I use “pang” as well? “A sudden pang of irritation”?

Calme-toi

Me llamo Jesse.

Saludos,

Jesse

Answer to an Email

Dear John

Honestly, I suffered from depression for some time during my undergraduate studies. This was the main reason for my low scores. Due to depression, I could not participate in classes and was mostly absent in some of my theoretical classes. Participation in class and being present in class were major factors in giving students a good score. I mostly studied the material of those classes on my own.
Regarding the article, unfortunately, there is a bad tradition among Iranian professors that they tend to put their names before their students in published articles. This is an implicit rule, but it has exceptions, too. If you check out articles published by Professor Moghadam, you can see this fact. In the lab I worked, supervisors (Ph.D. students who supervised M.S students) put their names before M.S students. That is why my name is in third place. The structure of that project was defined by me and the Ph.D. student. However, all of the experimental works are almost carried out by me. I say “almost” because the analysis of the results was done by both of us. The manuscript of the article was written by Mr. Eslami, Ph.D. Student.
In the second article which was a catalyst project, I talked with my supervisor and convinced him to put my name in the second place. My role in this project is similar to my first project. The only difference was that I conducted the whole study without other authors participating in the experimental work and I also wrote the manuscript. The publication of this article has been delayed for some reason. One of them is because Professor Moghadam is retiring from teaching.

Best wishes,
Ali

Could you please help by correcting anything that's wrong or unnatural in my sentences?
You can change the order of the sentences, do whatever you want!
I'd like to learn some common phrases and slang! 🙇‍♂️
Also, I'd like to get your advice on talking to foreign people
I look forward to your constructive comments.✍️

By the way, "A" is me and "B" is a foreigner.

B: Excuse me? Could you help me?
A: Yeah. Sure.
B: Are we anywhere near the Sunrise hotel?
A: Oh, Sorry, I’m not sure. Umm, if you're not in a rush, I'll look it up now.
B: Oh, thank you.
A: No, worries. Wait a minute.
B: Okay.
A: Sunrise hotel, right?
B: Yes!
A: Okay. If Mr. Google isn't mistaken, this should get us there. Right this way.
B: Oh, are you gonna show me there?
A: Sure! But if you want.
B: Oh, thank you!

A: Ah~, a little bit. haha
B: Ok, I’m looking for Ebisu station. Is there one around here?
A: It's not that far, so shall I take you there?
B: Oh, really?
A: Sure!
B: Thank you.
A: Yeah! Right, let's go!
B: Anyways, how long will it take to get there?
A: Well, I guess about ten minutes. Are you in a rush?
B: There’s no rush.
A: I think I'm right, but this is the first time for me to go to Ebisu station from this road, so please don't be mad if I'm wrong. haha
B: OK. haha

B: Excuse me? Do you know where Hara community centre?
A: Yeah, I know.
B: Can you tell me how to get to there?
A: Sure! Well, Is it okay you don't take notes?
B: Yeah, it's ok.
A: Okay, right. From here you need to turn right there, and then again turn right at the end. And turn left at the next corner. Then you'll see a straight road. Go straight there. From here, my memory is a little fuzzy, I guess, take the first or second turn to the left. If it dead-ends at a house, that's not the corner, so go ahead and look for another corner! If you see a corner where the road seems to continue, turn left there, I guess the second corner. And then keep going straight and you will see a house on the left surrounded by trees, that's the community center. Sorry, that was complicating to explain. Let me say it
one more time.
B: Oh, you're so kind. Thank you. So actually, let me take notes.
A: First, turn right there. Secondly, turn right at the end. Thirdly, turn left at the next corner. Fourthly, if you see a straight road, go straight. Lastly, you turn left and go straight at the road that seems to continue, and then a house on the left surrounded by trees is the one. Are you going to be OK? Let me see.
B: Yeah, ok!
A: Yes, looks ok. If I'm not mistaken in my explanation. haha
B: I hope so. haha
A: If it doesn't seem to work, ask someone else again. Good luck.
B: That's a big help. Thank you so much! Have a nice day!
A: You too!

A: Hello?
B: Hi!
A: Are you Simon?
B: Yeah!
A: Oh, nice to meet you, I'm Sho.
B: Nice to meet you too!
A: Is it okay if I call you Simon?
Do you want me to call you "Sai" or "Mon" or something like that? haha
B: Please call me as you like. haha
A: In Russia, is there a word that you use to politely call someone by their name, like "‾san" in Japan, when you first talk someone?
B: Yes, there is.
We use the name of the person's father.
For example, if President Putin's name is "Владимир" and his father's name is "Владимирович", we call him "Владимир Владимирович".
A: So do I have to know the father's name in order to call a Russian person by their honorific title like "◯◯-san"?
B: Yes.
So, if the person you are addressing is a superior, you must remember their name and their father's name when you meet them for the first time and ask for their father's name if they don't give you their business card.
A: I see, I've learned something new. Thank you! haha
B: But you don't have to use it now because it is used in business situations or when you need to be polite.
A: Got it!
I'll call you Simon then.
B: Yes!
A: By the way, do you want me to correct all your Japanese on this call? Or would you rather just continue the conversation without interruptions, so long as I understand what you are saying?
B: Uh, I want you to correct everything.
A: Gotcha!
So, as we talk naturally, if your Japanese is wrong, I can correct it each time?
B: Yes.
A: Also, do you want me to correct your Japanese in a polite way or in a natural, casual way?
B: Casual, please!
A: OK.
B: And would you like to practise intonation? Or would you like to leave intonation for now?
B: It is very difficult to master intonation, so let's correct my Japanese first, and leave intonation for later.
A: Got it!
B: What about you?
A: I don't speak Russian at all, so I'd like to hear about Russia in English or Japnese and hear about things from a Russian point of view.
B: Okay.
A: By the way, have you ever used this app to make a phone call?
B: Yes.
A: Oh, I just got this app, so it's my first time making a phone call.
B: Oh, really?
A: Yeah, plus when I think about it, this is the first time in my life that I'm talking to a Russian person. You are the first Russian I've ever talked to.
B: Oh, really!?
A: Yeah. What’s so surprising? lol Do you get many chances to talk to foreigners? Have you ever met and talked with Japanese people?
B: Yeah, I have. There was a Japanese student at my university, so I have.
A: Oh, I see. There were not many European students at my university. There were none in my department.
B: Which countries were most of them from?
A: Asian countries. Korea, China, Myanmar, and so on.
B: I see.
A: There are people in Japan who look Russian, but I don't know if they are really Russian, so maybe I haven't even seen them.
I don't know how to distinguish between people from countries surrounding Russia.
Can you tell the difference between a Japanese, a Chinese and a Korean person?
B: It's difficult, but surprisingly I can tell. lol
A: No way. haha
Even I sometimes make mistakes. haha
Have you ever talked to someone who you thought was Russian, but turned out to be from a different country?
B: Well, it just so happens that they were Ukrainian. haha
A: I see, there are people who were born in Russia but grew up in Ukraine, and vice versa, right?
B: Yes.
A: Hmm, Russian...
I wonder if there are any famous Russians in Japan? Hmmm I wonder if I know any Russians...
B: You know President Puchin?
A: Oh, yeah! He's famous.
Especially now that he is in the news every day. lol
Oh, yeah! Gorbachev is famous too.
Also Stalin.
Political people are famous.
And Gagarin. Not politics though. lol
B: I see.
A: Oh! There he is! I just remembered!
A famous Russian in Japan!
It's Hyodor!
B: Oh, really?
A: Sure! If you were to ask Japanese, "who is the strongest in human race?" they will all say "Hyodor.
Maybe. haha
B: I think it's different now. haha
A: Oh, and Alexander Karelin is famous too in Japan. If you ask the Japanese, "who is the strongest of the primates?" they will all say Karelin.
Perhaps. haha
Anyways, who is the most famous Japanese in Russia?
B: Well... I don't know who is the most famous, but I guess Hayao Miyazaki is famous.
A: Oh, Ghibli!
Have you seen them too?
B: Yes!
A: What do you like best?
B: Well, I wonder what number one would be...
It depends on my mood.
But the one that just popped into my head is "Porco Rosso"!
A: Oh, really? haha That's rare. You're a rare Pokemon. haha
B: Whyyy? haha
"Marco" is so cool, isn't he?
Do you dislike "Porco Rosso"?
A: No, I don't dislike it at all!
But I haven't heard too many people say it first on their list of favorites.
I guess most of them are around Spirited Away, Totoro, Princess Mononoke.
B: Yeah, right. haha
It's the same in Russia. "Spirited Away" and "Howl" and so on are popular.
A: Oh, all countries are the same, right? Except for Simon. haha
B: Yeah, looks that way. haha
A: Anyways, I like Spirited Away!
How about "Spirited Away"? Simon points, out of 10.
B: Well, 7 points. lol
A: Why so low! haha
B: Well, it's not bad, but it doesn't make me wanna watch it again.
A: Really!? I've probably seen it 50 times or more. haha
So I must be an oddball for Simon.
B: Yeah, you are. haha
A: But from my point of view, you are an oddball. haha
Anyways, what do you think of Japanese anime in Russia?
B: There are people who watch it.
But I don't watch much.
A: Uh-huh.
B: I used to watch them when I was a kid, but not anymore.
A: I see.
What are the popular anime in Russia?
B: Recently, I guess "Demon Slayer" and things like that.
A: Ah ha, I knew it, cuz all countries are the same. haha
What about Japanese movies?
B: Well, I think more people watch TV dramas than Japanese movies.
A: Do you watch them?
B: I don't watch so many Japanese movies myself. haha
But I have seen the old ones. What was the name of that.... oh, "Departures"?
A: Oh, "Departures", how was it?
B: Hmm, yeah, it was good.
Oh, and I recently saw Drive My Car.
A: Oh, the one that won some kind of Academy Award?
B: Yes!
A: How was it?
B: Better than I thought.
A: Oh, I see, but I realized again winning an Academy Award has a great effect, because it prodded even Simon to watch a Japanese movie. haha
B: Yeah, exactly. haha
I guess when movies win awards, other countries wanna import them. Other Japanese films don't get imported very often.
A: Oh, I see. I think it's true because most Japanese films these days are made for the domestic market, so maybe people overseas don't want to watch them.
By the way, do you usually watch movies on streaming services?
B: Well, you can watch them for free.
A: Hey! haha You can't do that!
That's illegal!
B: I'm sorry. haha
A: Oh I see, now I know. In Japan, video rental shops are disappearing. I thought it was because of streaming services, but it's because of you! haha
B: Yeah, it's possible. haha

Journal

Yesterday, a person added me on Skype. Although I didn't know who he or she was, I accepted the request.

There were no profile photos, and his or her name was just a string of characters. I didn't say hello to him or her after accepting his or her friend's application.

This afternoon, she greeted me. She said her name was Blay, a hairdresser in the US. She was in a mixed race. Her mom was from Dallas and daddy was from Ghana.

She also told me that she was in Africa right now and her daddy just passed away a few months ago. She was the only child in her family. She couldn’t inherit her daddy's gold mine, because according to African tradition, only male or married women can inherit their parents' property.

She said she was still a spinster. To inherit her dad's gold mine, she had to find a man to marry. She said my profile left her a good impression, so she asked me to see if I could help her, and promised that she would give me 40 percent of the property.

I said I couldn't help her because I was a married older man. Even after that, she still insisted I could do that, and all I should do was to talk to her lawyer and give them my name.

I strongly rejected her, and I said even if I could help her, I wouldn't take a cent from her because I was not a greedy person.

She knew that she couldn't cheat me, so she just said thank you. I also said the best wishes to her.

During my whole English learning journey, I met many different types of scammers, but they never succeeded because I could spot them out at the very beginning.

You're Rare Pokemon. haha
B: Whyyy?
Except for Simon. haha
B: Yeah, looks that way. haha
A: AnywaysI like Spirited Away!
How about "Spirited Away"? Simon points, out of 10.
B: Well, 7 points. lol
A: Why so low! haha
B: Well, it's not bad, but it doesn't make me wanna watch it again.
A: Really!? I've probably seen it 50 times or more. haha So I must be an oddball for Simon.
I thought it was because of streaming services, but it's because of you! haha
B: Yeah, it's possible. haha

finding out about the history of the house or building

In some countries, more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.
What are the reasons for this? How can people research this question?

In the present society, a myriad of people from some nations is curious about the origin of their houses or building. The curiosity about Interesting stories about the past and the concern about the places can be two rational and primary for this. In this essay, two reasons and the way to learn about this would be discussed.
The first reason worth mentioning is that we live in a modern-day, where a range of intriguing stories about the past exists, which leads to the attraction of knowledge about the past. The gone-by invention and achievement were hyped in media and through word of mouth. That leads to the eagerness to find the own origin of the home. The second reason is the insecurity of people about the place they live. When people do not grasp firm knowledge about their home, they sometimes feel confused about what happened in the past in their home. When they are clear about what has gone on in their place, they feel more secure and safe.
In this modern-day, the biggest source for finding information is the internet. First of all, surfing the internet is the first and necessary step to approach knowledge. However, not all information about local homes and buildings is not available and save on the internet. In this situation, asking local people or relatives is the optimal choice. People, who live in the same area, can have some knowledge about their neighborhood.
In the light of the above analysis, curiosity and seeking the feeling of security could be two of the reasons for finding out about the origin of the place people live. To do this, searching on the internet and asking the local people could be the way.

Berlin
