What book do I read these days ? On the road, from Kerouac

These days, you'll find me reading On the road, from Jack Kerouac. I live in Germany and I found the book for free in a special book-sharing box in the street. The book is worldly famous to have inspired all a generation of Beats and Hippies in the 60s and 70s. That's why I am very interested to know more about it.
I never had the occasion to read it in Englisch (its original language) or in French (my mother tongue). Now I kind of have to read it in German, which is a language I am currently learning. I already read around 25 pages. Of course, I am far from understanding every word, and I often miss the meaning of complete sentences. But I am still able to read it rather fluently and to enjoy the story. I namely hate to read with the dictionnary nearby. I prefer to accept that I will not understand everything !

The author was a young New-Yorker writer. In the book, he explains how he decided in 1947 to travel from East to West through the US. He had no car, and as he was on a budget, he tried to spent as less as possible on the public transports and relied on "stop". By that, I mean that he waited on the side of the road until someone nicely picked him up. By doing that, he met varied people and lived some real adventures.
To be able to say more about the story, I will have to progress in my reading. Anyway, my text is already long enough as it is !

Thank you so much, I discovered this website recently and I am grateful for your help. Your explanations are very clear and detailed. I think it is important for me to practice a bit of English, or in no time I will replace it by German in my mind. I am already forgetting the "natural" order of words :D Also, maybe I should make peace with dictionaries !

What book do I read these days ? On the road, from Kerouac

What book doam I read these days ing at the moment? 'On the rRoad', fromby Jack Kerouac What book am I reading at the moment? 'On the Road', by Jack Kerouac

In this context, you are talking about what's happening currently, but the timeframe is quite limited, so it's best to say 'at the moment' or 'currently'. In the context of talking about books that you are reading, you would say 'these days' if you wanted to compare what you read now to what you used to read many, many years ago. For example: 'These days, I read adult fantasy novels. However, when I was a child, I used to read Harry Potter.' Also, whenever talking about a book/movie/song/etc., the title needs to be enclosed by inverted commas, and needs to be in Title Case (see this article here: https://www.thesaurus.com/e/grammar/title-case/) Also, we usually say the author's full name in English, or at least their first initial and then their surname, not just the surname :)

I knew exactly what you meant by 'special book-sharing box in the street', however the English name for one of those is a 'street library' :)

What did you mean by 'beats' here? Are you talking about music?

'Namely' is used in the context where you want to call something out specifically, and doesn't make sense in this context. I know you hate dictionaries, so that's okay! I am the same. However, sometimes they can be useful for good example sentences for a particular word. For example, for the word 'namely', my computer's dictionary gave this sentence as an example: "The menu makes good use of Scottish produce, namely game and seafood."

I know in French there is always a space left before any punctuation mark, however in English, we don't leave a space.

The author was a youngfrom New- York, and was young when her wrioter the book. The author was from New York, and was young when he wrote the book.

The author was young, however since the book is a bit older, the author is likely to now be older too :P

Are you talking about the US' east and west coasts? Or the East (Asia) and the West (Europe/the US)? Because if the former, you don't have to use capital letters, but if the latter, you do (because they are effectively the name for a particular region, like you would use a capital letter for a region name like 'Oceania').

I think what you were referring to as 'stop' is called 'hitchhiking' in English, based on your explanation below.
