Only Yesterday

At the elementary school I attended, the rule at lunchtime was for the students on lunch duty to head to the prep room, pick up the tableware, the large stockpots of soup, and the food containers filled with rice, carry them back to the classroom, and serve the meals ourselves.
One day the menu was everyone's favorite: curry. I happened to be on lunch duty that day, and I was making my way to the classroom carrying a heavy stockpot filled with curry. Even though there was a strict school rule against running in the hallways, I got carried away, goofed off, and started running.
As a result I slipped, fell, and to my horror, spilled about 70% of the curry all over the floor. I fiercely cursed my own stupidity, but it was truly no use crying over spilled milk. The portion of curry for each person was reduced to just 30%. Overwhelmed with guilt and embarrassment for causing trouble for everyone, I wished the floor would swallow me whole and just stood there shrinking in on myself.
I braced myself, internally terrified that the entire class would condemn me, but their reaction was entirely different from what I had imagined. Though they were shocked, not a single person got angry at me. On the contrary, some of the boys said, "You can reduce my portion even more," and a few girls even offered, "I don't need any, so you can have mine."
What's more a few classmates went to other classrooms, explained the situation, and brought back stockpots of leftover curry. Thanks to them, we ended up with even more curry than we had before the spill! Even as a child, it was an unforgettable experience where I was profoundly saved by the warmth and kindness of humanity.
