Recently, I came up with a way to make the proccess of both creating and reviewing my flashcards more entertaining: Adding GIFs! Whatever word you might want to learn, I guarantee that there is a GIF out there that will illustrate it. When struggling to remember a concept behind a phrase, having an image to relate it to can help immensly. I also think it's just more fun of an activity than trying to drum plain translations into your head.
