I'm not sure if I can agree with the criticism on the image on the left. What the person correcting you is talking about is that we can use the present tense to talk about habits or things that we are still doing now, "I swim often," "We eat cereal in this family" etc. Since it looks like you were actually writing about something that happened in the past (and doesn't happen anymore) then yes I would say the past tense is the tense you should be using. Not to dismiss the critique but it looks incorrect based on the text.
