Word games written by Nisioisin

Nisioisin, which is just pen name and can be read with a same pronunciation even if you read backwards (palindrome), is one of the most famous novelists in Japanese teen manga.
His novels are filled with esoteric story-telling, extraordinary characters, and word games.
My favorite character is Oshino Ougi "忍野　扇" who appear in a latter half of his anime stories "Monogatari series". She is a mysterious girl dressed in black, and no one knows who she is including gender, birth, and her purpose.
By the way, I don't mean to describe the story in detail. I'd like to pay attention to her name itself and explain the secret meaning in it.
When she appeared in the story for the first time, she introduced herself as a big fan of protagonist's friend.
After that, she and another character named Hanekawa Tsubasa "羽川　翼" became a rival.
In the final episode, it was revealed that ”扇” is a false name and created by her role in the story.
”扇” means "folding fan" in Japanese, so people realized that he play on the word "fan".
Moreover, its kanji is consist of "戸" and "羽". It implied that Ougi prohibit Hanekawa from talking freely because putting the door ("戸") in one's mouth means like this in an obsolete phrase.
Though "Monogatari series" are also popular among anime fans overseas, such word games might be difficult for non-native Japanese speakers to figure out.

西尾維新は、逆から読んでも同じように聞こえるペンネームで、日本の有名なライトノベル作家の一人だ。
彼の作品は、難解なストーリー、奇妙なキャラクター、言葉遊びに満ちている。
私の最も好きなキャラは忍野扇だ。彼女は「物語シリーズ」の後半に登場する。
彼女は黒に身を包んだ謎の少女で、性別・出生・目的さえも明らかでない。
それはさておき、ここで物語を詳細に記述するつもりはない。彼女の名前そのものに注目して、ここに隠された言葉遊びを紹介したい。
彼女が初めて物語に登場した時、主人公の友達の大ファンだと自己紹介がなされた。
その後、彼女は別のキャラ羽川翼とライバルになる。
そして最終話で、扇という名前が偽名で彼女のキャラクター像から作られたことが明らかとなる。
「扇」は日本語で扇子を意味することから、作者が「ファン」という言葉をかけていたことに気づく。
さらに、「扇」という漢字は「戸」と「羽」から構成されている。これは忍野扇が羽川翼を黙らせることを暗示している。なぜなら、「戸を立てる」は今は使われなくなった古い言葉でこういった意味を指しているからだ。
「物語シリーズ」は海外のアニメファンの間でも人気だが、このような言葉遊びを理解するのは非母国語者には難しいだろう。
