The reasons to learn a foreign language may differ for each person. For middle school students, it is just an exam they need to pass; for employees, it is unfinished business that they have procrastinated on many times in the past. And for college students, it is a gateway that opens wide career opportunities.
As a college student, besides a requirement for my career, it also means to unlock the doors to other cultures and places since it is a universal language. I love learning new languages. I have studied Spanish, Japanese, and Korean in the past. It makes me feel like I can travel to those other places, make friends with locals, and have a chance to understand the culture. It feels so exotic.
Mostly, I get triggered by a movie, a series I've watched, or a book I've read. Like the NHK World Japan TV channel, I discovered it at my grandmother's house in the highlands. There was such exotic food, music, and programs, and especially the language... I was fascinated by the culture. How disciplined, decent, and polite they are... I still admire and try to be as hardworking and disciplined as they are.
With each language I learn, I feel closer to the culture of that language. And I dream of visiting those countries one day. Drinking sake with my Japanese friends, shooting a documentary film with my American colleagues, visiting Spanish rural villages... I see the language learning process as more than a requirement to get a job or a boring necessity. I see it as an opportunity to blend different cultures and meet people from around the world.
