Which word is the correct translation for 宗教?

When we talk about 宗教 in Chinese, we talk about the belief in the existence of a god or gods and the activities that are connected with the worship of them.

I thought it had the same meaning as the word "religion". But after the last three entries, I found maybe I was wrong, my friends here talked about 信仰 which I believed was "belief".

I'm really confused right now.

This kind of situation happened many times when I was learning English -- I thought I talked about one thing, but it actually meant another thing.

当在中文中谈论宗教时,我们谈论的是对一个或多个神的存在的信仰,以及与崇拜他们有关的活动。

我以为它和“religion”这个词的意思是一样的。但在三个日志之后,我发现也许我错了,这里的朋友们谈论信仰,我认为这是“belief”。

现在真的很困惑。

这种情况在我学英语的时候发生过很多次——我以为我说的是此事,但实际上是彼事。

This kind of situation has happened many times when I wasile learning English -- I’ve thought I was talkeding about one thing, but it actually meant another thing.

I changed the verb tense because you’re still learning English. Your original sounded like you’d stopped.

Based on your definition of 宗教, that it’s the “belief in the existence of a god or gods and the activities that are connected with the worship of them,” you could translate it as “theistic religion” (a religion based on belief in a god or gods).

As you probably know, there are no gods in Theravāda Buddhism (南传佛教), the type of Buddhism that is dominant in Laos and Thailand. Do you not consider Theravāda Buddhism to be a 宗教 ? If not, then what do you call it in Chinese?

Thank you!

I don't know much about Theravāda Buddhism, so I can't say what it is.

Are you sure there are no gods in it? There is Theravāda Buddhism in Yunnan Province too, but its believers worship the Buddha and his reincarnations.

Yes, I’m sure that Theravāda Buddhism doesn’t involve the worship of gods, but I’m not sure that “南传佛教” is the correct Chinese term for Theravāda Buddhism.

In Theravāda Buddhism, the Buddha is believed to have discovered a way to achieve nirvana (the “extinguishing” of reincarnation). Under their system of beliefs, the Buddha is gone—he stopped being reincarnated more than 2,000 years ago. Therefore, the Buddhism you described in Yunnan Province doesn’t meet this definition of Theravāda Buddhism, if they believe that the Buddha has been reincarnated.

That's interesting.

There's always something I don't know.

Which word is the correct translation for 宗教?

When we talk about 宗教 in Chinese, we talk about the belief in the existence of a god or gods and the activities that are connected with the worship ofping them.

Your sentence doesn't appear wrong to me, but the corrected version makes the sentence flow better.

I thought it had the same meaning as the word "religion".

But after the last three entries, I foundrealized that maybe I was wrong, my friends here talked about 信仰, which I believed was "belief".

"to realize" is a more appropriate term for this context. Or you could also use "to come to the conclusion" = I came to the conclusion that maybe I was wrong

I'm really confused right now.
