I had never heard the idiom apple polisher before! I had to look it up. I think it would be more common to call such a person a "suck up" or a "brown noser". Brown noser is something you only want to say in informal settings because of its meaning; trying overly hard to please somebody can also be called "kissing somebody's ass", so "brown noser" refers to getting poop on your nose from doing this lol
