What are "Fake News" ?

It's easy to recognize the importance of the issue of Fake News in today's society. However, when we try to aproach the topic , the first difficulties of definition and contextualisation appear immediately. Fortunately, a good definition you can find int he Oxford Dictionaries some years ago:
"an adjective defined as relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief"
This definition already introduces us to philosophically charged concepts: "objective facts", "public opinion", "self-beliefs". Notions that I will try to link to some historical moments of thought.

Thank very much for your corrections. One question: Why do you write "What is Fake News"?, because "News" seems plural.

'News' is plural but is more often used as a singular noun (i.e., The News). Merriam-Webster calls it 'plural in form but singular in construction' (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/news). For example, 'did you read the news?' or 'the news is on at 5'.

The Wikipedia entry for news and fake news begins 'News is...' and 'Fake News is...'. It becomes plural when it's used as an adjective. For example 'Fake News websites are...'.

I hope that makes sense!
