I randomly choose words, expressions, phrasal verbs etc. from my flash cards and my task is to incorporate them into (a) meaningful sentence(s) or a short story.
Random words; GET BROWNIE POINTS, TO GET BY, A SMATTERING OF
You don't need to have special skills or knowledge to get some brownie points when camping. If you just know how to get by with matches and firewood or know a smattering of knotting then you already have some advantages over other rookie scouts.

Feedback
'a smattering of knots' is correct but in daily use I only ever hear 'a smattering of knowledge'. 'If you only have a smattering of knowledge and know how to get by with just matches and firewood' would sound more natural.

Perfect use of "get brownie points" and "to get by". Not sure this is *exactly* how I would use "smattering" but it's not an expression I use often. I think "If you just know... ... a smattering of knots" would sound more natural.
Beyond that small change in usage of "smattering", it's perfect! Well done
