Science are thought to be such a boring knowledge field that most of the students usually get interested in associated subjects, because of the prospects of a better future in economic terms, particularly in case of engineering, not in a vocational way.
Nowadays, youths are daily immersed in whatever kind of media: TV, Youtube, social media and so on, as well as, all the typical characters involved in, like actors, musicians, writers,... Due to that fact they are more influented by what it is considerated fashionable through this platforms, than by means of their teachers at school. That is the reason why these should be a tool to take into account in order to inform students about scientist’s contribution in our society.
Nonetheless, all explained above would make no sense without a proper public funding, which enable them to choose this way. It should be noted that most of fields in sciences are dependent on it. Therefore, young people will realise this career path is possible and not get frustrated if governments finantially support it.
Comparing both points, advertising could encourage young people to study science, but it is a long term measure. However, grants are the short term and most effective way to allow current universitary students make their dream of working in science true. Moreover, this would be the best scenario so as to promote the next student generation, currently in the secondary school, to become interested in science.
As a conclusion, youth will think about study science degrees whenever this path is affordable, so as not to need to work abroad far away from their roots.
