I think in Brazil they say "assisti" but in Portugal it's more usual to use the verb "vi" (from "ver"). "tinha" is the conjugation of the verb "ter" in "Pretérito Imperfeito". We use this conjugation for things that were in a way but not any longer. Saying "tinha dificuldade", you would be implying that you were having difficulties but not anymore. "tive" is probably the conjugation you were looking for, it's the "Pretério Perfeito", basically, normal past. "dificuldade com o sentido" doesn't sound very natural. It sounds better if you say "dificuldade em perceber o sentido" ("difficulties in understanding the point").
