I thought I could use "singular they" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they because I talk about presidents in general and not about a concrete one.

As I said, you could use "them" informally. My understanding is that most style guides still recommend against the singular "they" in formal writing, though it is commonly heard in casual speech. It depends on what level of formality you want to follow.
