Visiting Relatives
One of the Chinese traditions for the Traditional Chinese New Year is to visit relatives.
The Traditional Chinese New Year is on the first day of January in the lunar calendar. Nowadays, the government gives seven days off to citizens for the Chinese New Year.
In the countryside, people are supposed to do nothing on the first day of the traditional Chinese New Year. They think they have been busy for the entire year, so they deserve the day of rest.
Starting on the second day, they begin to visit their relatives, and on the second day they are supposed to visit their grandparents on their mother's side.
I don't know nowadays what gifts people in the countryside bring to their relatives, because I have been away from the countryside for many years.
When I was a child in my home village, people were very poor, so they didn't have good gifts. They only had steamed buns, homemade desserts, and canned fruits.
When they visited their relatives, they used a bamboo basket holding the aforementioned foods and with a towel covering the opening of the basket. They either walked to their relatives' villages, or rode a bike if they had.
