Today, I read an article that depicts the story of the famous Van Gogh. He was born in 1853, which is the year that the American Naval commander visited Japan. It's easier for me to remember the date by this comparison.
Van Gogh only sold a piece of his artwork in his life, however, his paintings became astoundingly popular after the late 20th century. As you may know, some of his paintings are worth over $100 million, and the world's most expensive painting is also from his hand. Sadly, died at the age of 37.
He once formed a living agreement with a pregnant alcoholic woman with a five-year-old daughter, when the woman moved out, she took a boy with her. Therefore, some historians believe Van Gogh fathered the boy.
He was born in 1853, (which iswas also) the year that the American Naval commander visited Japan.

I love Van Gogh! His life story and relationship with his brother Theo are all very fascinating.
He was born in 1853, which is the year that (theat certain/a certain) American Naval commander (who?) visited Japan.
"The" isn't ungrammatical, but it does imply the reader is supposed to know what naval commander is, but I, as a reader, do not. Even replacing "the" with "that/a certain" sort of implies this.
It's easierThat makes it relatively easy for me to remember the date by this comparison.
"by comparison" here implies something, but it's not clear what or if that's the intention. "Relatively easy" I feel sets the comparison point more clearly as either "compared to other dates" or simply "more easy than other things I have to remember."

While "a" can only be used in a place like this when there is "one" of it, it doesn't actually communicate "one" as new information.
> There is a bookstore beyond that intersection.
In this sentence, "a" doesn't imply that only one bookstore exists, there could be one further down the road. It only highlights the most relevant bookstore beyond the intersection.

comma to semicolon: This could be a period, but it relates too much to the previous sentence to want to separate these thoughts. In such cases, the semicolon is best.

If you don't specify which commander it is, it's better to use "a" or "an" rather than "the".
