"de" isn't compulsory in this case "elle était recommandée" would be part of the very rare instances where a passive phrasing would sound more natural than an active one. In a pinch, you could say "où ON la recommandait" (with the impersonal "on") "pendant mes études" would refer to a school or college curriculum

J'ai eégalement commence aé à utiliser Babbel plus tot cette anneée. J'ai également commencé à utiliser Babbel cette année.

Accents are compulsory => également, commencé, à, où etc "plus tôt cette année" is understandable but I cannot say it sounds very natural. Just "cette année" would be better (the use of the passé composé makes it clear you're talking about the past)
