Diary: Ancestor Money
Last month, I wrote an article that was about Chinese Local Gods, in which I wrote about having the habit of "burning spell", and then someone left a comment saying that it reminded him of Harry Potter. lol. They are not the same, but I do not know how to explain this thing. Today I finally found the English name of it.
Ancestor money is paper that you can burn to send into the spirit realm. This burning ritual at your ancestral altar provides the ancestors with what they need on the "other side". To burn money for our ancestors is to repay their blessing in another world and pray that they will continue to bless our life and official career. Some of money are printed with silver powder on one side and no design on the other. Some of them have the image of the Jade Emperor, who is a Higher God in Taoist pantheon.
Then something magical happened. This custom has spread abroad, ancestor money was localized into a familiar style. Some people print some pop stars like Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley on the money... A guy made a tree which is made of pine nuts and cinnamon, and put the money in the tree, which is specially prepared for burning money.
