[Translation Practice] Practicing Chopin after retirement

*This is just translation practice, not my story.

Recently I’ve heard on the radio that many middle and old-aged people are taking piano lessons. On a TV program featuring piano performers who improvisationally play the piano placed in airports or train stations, I think I often see the elderly among them.

I started taking piano lessons after my compulsory retirement, thinking it might help prevent dementia. This year marks the 6th year since then. I had some experience playing the piano because I taught at elementary schools. Nevertheless, the piano in my house was dust-covered for more than ten years, during which I was a supervisor. My fingers didn’t move as I expected in the first lesson. However, after two years since then, I was delighted to be able to play Moonlight by Beethoven, which I had thought impossible for me. This achievement was due to encouragement from my piano teacher, who is good at praising people. Besides, when I successfully played ARASHI's Kite, which has a lot of modulation, I was so happy that I felt like I could walk on the air.

These days my performance of Chopin's Nocturne have been working out well, making me realize the power of "Practice makes perfect." I’m sure it was right decision that I enlarged the score with a copier for my practice.

My goal is to perform in front of my close friends someday. For years to come, I'll come across a lot of pieces of music.

I hate this phrase. A lot of people use "practice makes better" instead now.

I’m sure it was right decision that I was smart and used a copier to enlarged the score with a copiers for my practice.

We don't really use the phrase, "I'm sure it was the right decision," in the US so I changed it.

My goal is to perform in front of my close friends someday.

For years to come, I'll come across a lot of pieces of music.
