"Alors"= "then" in this context. Also, I am using "vous" here (the polite form of singular "you"/plural "you") since the narrator is speaking directly to someone else. Depending on the context "tu" (2nd person singular) can also be used (e.g. if the speaker is talking to someone close to them). If there are several people listening to the narrator revert back to "vous".
