I wanted to be a biologist since I was in elementary school, but my idea of what biologist does changed few times in my life. As a child, I thought that every biologist is chasing lions in Serengeti, or dives in Jacques Yves Cousteau's team, or (if he is an advances scientist) - recreates dinosaurs form the drop of blood in mosquito in amber. Guess what: I work in the Academia for about ten years now, but I've never done any of these things. I feel especially sorry about not recreating dinosaurs.
In reality, things in science are fascinating, although they might seem boring from the outsider's perspective. Oftentimes, a scientist can year by year do approximately the same things, following the protocols he or she mastered. This is extremely important because it makes results reliable, but it can be boring as well. And sometimes it is actually a waste of resources: a person with a lot of expertise has to spend weeks doing something like counting cells on images of a tissue. This is obviously a bad way to go, and this is why at some point I started to write simple computer programs. Automatize here, speed up there, try to not do the same dull thing more than once in your life, let the machine do it for you.
The problem is, after first relatively simple steps, I realized that I do not really know math and programming and need to study it. But, of course, I cannot abandon my already started projects for this, they are going just fine. And it would be nice to study some new methods in biology, when there is an opportunity, and to collaborate whenever possible.
So, now I have to prepare my PhD thesis, do some work in the lab, study math and programming stuff and noteworthy eat and sleep. Don't repeat it at home :)
Too much stuff to do

When you are talking about an unnamed person, you can use the pronoun "they" to avoid specifying a gender

"they have mastered" would also fit

I am not quite sure what you meant by "noteworthy" because it didn't really make sense in the context, but possibly "importantly" works for you
Don't repeattry it at home :)
"Don't repeat it at home" is perfectly correct English, but there is an expression "Don't try this at home!" which is what I think you're referencing here :)

Good piece of writing! Pronouns are hard to get right, so good luck with improving them. And good luck with the programming — I can recommend "learn python the hard way" if you're looking for a free course that can take you from beginner to intermediate (if you have the time, of course). Otherwise, writing emacs macros to improve your LaTeX output of your PhD thesis is a traditional way to procrastinate ;)
