Tokyo Olympic
I have a four-days holiday starting tomorrow, thank to the Tokyo Olympic games.
Several games started today before the opening ceremony of Olympics. The Japanese women's softball team played against the Australian team. It is midwinter in Australia. I feel sorry because they came from the cold country to the hot country.
東京オリンピックがあるので、明日から4連休です。
オリンピックの開会式を前に、今日いくつかの競技が始まりました。ソフトボール女子の日本チームはオーストラリアと対戦しました。今、オーストラリアは真冬です。寒い国から暑い国に来て、気の毒だなあと思います。

Otherwise it may sound like they're traveling from one part of their own country that's cold to another part of their country that's hot.

Well done! I suspect midwinter is archaic because it's associated with the Christmas literature and songs from the 1800s. Its a little silly that we'd use more words to explain something that we already have a word for, but that's just how it is.
