The Way We Learn About the Past
We can learn about things that happened 5000 years ago in the Near East, as people there first started to write. However, there are still people in other regions where written words do not exist; we learn their history through sagas. Those sagas or legends that pass down generation by generation help preserve their previous history that would be otherwise lost. They help decipher many mysteries that puzzled anthropologists.
However, the first people who were like us existed so long ago that their sags, if there are any, failed to survive to today. Archaeologists have neither written history materials nor sagas to understand where the first human beings came from.
Fortunately, we still have the tools they made. Ancient people had started to make tools, especially flints, due to the ease of making compared with other tools. They may have tried wood or skin — we are not positive about it as those materials are easy to decay. Stones do not: they last way longer than the bones of the people who used them to make tools. Thanks to those stone tools, we now have a better understanding of how human beings evolved all the way to who we are now.
