The Spy and the Traitor - 8

Summary n8 - Book: “The Spy and the Traitor.”

DISCLAIMER: REAL STORY.

Oleg’s period at "School 101" was the best of his life. To make it into service in the "First Chief Directorate" was the concealed dream of every young officer. Vasili, Oleg’s older brother, worked hard for "Directorate S". Being a professional illegal, he moved from one country to another under false names, serving the underworld Soviet spy network. Sometimes he hinted to Oleg “exotic” location, like Sweden and South Africa. Oleg hoped to follow in his brother’s footsteps and become an illegal*. However, much to his disappointment, he was assigned to a desk job at the KGB control centre. Precisely, he had to prepare documentation—convincing fake backstories, fake names and fake personas—for illegals.

At the “Centre”(as it was called) he was introduced to many Soviet’s “retired” spy heroes. Among whom, Konon Molody and Kim Philpy certainly stood out in terms of achievements. In 1943 the KGB had appropriated the idendity of a Canadian dead child and given it to Konon; this was not unusual practice among intelligence agencies. Thus, Konon grew up in Canada and was raised outwardly as a perfect Northamerican. In 1953, Konon settled in London. It was not long before he set about to put up a spy network, gathering intelligence on naval secrets.

As for Kim Philpy, he was one of the most effective and damaging Cold War spies. Kim Philpy was quintessentially British, but was also a communist. Born in 1912 to a family of the upper level class, he first attented Eton and Cambridge University, and then went on to “join” MI6. He rose to become head of counter-intelligence operations against the USSR. The same person who was supposed to “fight” the “enemy” was, in reality, the enemy itself. He did not damage only MI6, but the CIA as well because of his close “friendship” with CIA’s James Angleton. Philpy destroyed over twenty major CIA operations.

But more was to come. After Philpy’s defection, Angleton, who had risen to become head of the CIA, sank into a permanent state of distrust and paranoia. He came to see complots and double agents everywhere. All of this led him to almost bring down the organization itself.

*Is the part “become an illegal” redundant? Given that it’s clear what his brother’s job is.

*Is the part “become an illegal” redundant?

I would leave it in. But it's unclear from this excerpt exactly what an 'illegal' is. Perhaps you've already defined it in a previous excerpt.

Given that it’s clear what his brother’s job is.

Feedback

Generally excellent.

*Is the part “become an illegal” redundant?

An "illegal" was a spy with no diplomatic cover. He or she would be under the guise of a front job, which obviously wasn't a diplomatic one. I hope it's clearer.

Sometimes he hinted to Oleg “exotic” locations, like Sweden and South Africa.

Vasili was away for long periods because of his posting (UK spelling) abroad. So you can imagine the two of them "chatting" about it and Vasili vaguely mentioning South Africa, and other places. They didn't have proper full conversations as brothers. Vasili kept a lot of things from Oleg. I hope it's clearer what I meant
