The Mid-Autumn Festival is coming. It’s one of China’s traditional festivals.
I don’t know the origin of this festival. I only know some of its traditions.
The festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month in the Chinese calendar. This date usually falls in the middle of September in the solar calendar.
This festival is a time for people to visit their relatives, such as their maternal and paternal grandparents, uncles and aunts.
An indispensable gift when visiting relatives is mooncakes — a type of pastry made from wheat flour, nuts, dried fruits and sugar.
I don’t like eating mooncakes because they are too sweet. I always feel cloying after eating them.
Nevertheless, mooncakes have already become a symbol of this festival; without them, it wouldn’t feel like the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Thus, about one or two months before the festival, factories start producing mooncakes, which are then delivered to markets for sale. The prices of mooncakes also vary widely.
Every year for this festival, I don’t buy many mooncakes. I only buy a few high-quality ones for my family to taste.
