By the way, the high school baseball tournament began today. It is one of the most popular sports in Japan. NHK broadcast all the games. It was cancelled last year because of COVID-19. The infection is worse this year than last year, but the tournament is being held this year.

The High School Baseball Tournament
This morning, my wife told me that a swallowtail butterfly emerges[was emerging/had emerged] from a chrysalis in our garden.
The simple present "emerges" isn't appropriate unless your narration is completely in the present or unless you are describing a routine event.
I took a photo of it.

By the way, the high school baseball tournament began today.
ItBaseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan.
The original is grammatical, but it is better to not write "it" here since I would expect it to be referring to "high school baseball tournament," not "baseball."
NHK broadcasts all the games.
NHK is singular, so "broadcasts."
It was cancelled last year because of COVID-19.
The infection is worse this year than [it was] last year, but the tournament is [still] being held this year.
For contrast and emphasis, it would sound better to add "still."
