The Fentanyl Epidemic in the United States

Hello everyone! Today I am going to talk about a topic that I have been reading a lot in recent days: The fentanyl epidemic in the United States. To give some perspective to the seriousness of the issue, in 2022 two hundred people a week died from synthetic opioid overdoses, or to put it another way, seventy thousand people die from overdoses.
You may ask, why has there been such an increase in the abuse of these opiates? It seems that initially, pharmaceuticals were prescribing opiates to patients to relieve pain, which led them to an addiction to this drug. Moreover, as it is synthetic, its production is much more diversified and its price is much lower.
Even though China, one of the largest fentanyl-producing countries, banned the exports of fentanyl and its derivatives to the USA in 2019, its trade with Mexico still spills over to the United States.

The Fentanyl Epidemic in the United States

Hello everyone!

Today I am going to talk about a topic that I have been reading a lot about in recent days: The fentanyl epidemic in the United States.

To give some perspective to the seriousness of the issue, in 2022 two hundred, 200 people a week died from synthetic opioid overdoses, or to put it another way, seventy thousand70,000 people die from overdoses per [period of time].

70,000 per year? 70,000 since 2023?

You may ask, why has there been such an increase in the abuse of these opiates?

It seems that initially, pharmaceuticals were prescribing opiates to patients to relieve pain, which led them to an addiction to this drug.

Great entry! Your English is quite strong.

You touched on a very interesting topic... I live in Vancouver which is well known for its opioid crisis. My first job out of university, I worked in an area that had been severely impacted by addiction. Every day, I witnessed hard-working business owners constantly terrorized by addicts (windows breaking, causing a scene, stealing, etc), people sleeping all over the streets and in malls, the ambulance constantly coming by to take those who had overdosed away... It was truly a depressing place for everyone.

Here, it is a huge source of controversy that we have Safe Injection sites. To combat the overdose issue, the government gives away drugs that have been tested for purity. This way, addicts do not inject themselves with drugs from sketchy sources and potentially poison themselves. It is a huge source of controversy because some people see this as "enabling" them. But of course, as humanitarians, it is also important to save people and help them when they are in distress. This is why it is controversial.

I appreciate your corrections, and I sincerely hope that the situation in your area improves :) . Reading what you say, your government seems to be overwhelmed with the situation, offering what might be considered a "simple solution" to a complex and multifaceted issue. This situation isn't particularly noticeable here in Spain; even so, there has been an increase in the use of opiates in recent years, and there have even been cases where they have been mixed with other substances, such as heroin or cocaine. Also, we experienced a worrying episode with the heroin epidemic that hit Spain in the 1970s and 1980s. This caused a serious social, public health and public safety crisis, the scars of which are still visible.

No problem, and thank you for sharing your thoughts and a bit about Spain's history. I agree that the solution is definitely oversimplified here.

It is reassuring to hear that the issue isn't as noticeable in Spain, but it is concerning how there are more and more cases of mixing substances. Hopefully our governments can find solutions to combat the growing problem :)
