I wanted to try another tutor for Japanese in order to see how useful it could be, but I worried if this could affect the payment I made for the first lesson, so I started investigating a bit and I found that you didn't receive the payment at all! I'm worried if you'll end up giving your time with free classes or not receiving the enough payment that your time and classes deserve.

I can actually help you out! I was a student on Preply before I started teaching, so I have a lot of knowledge regarding how hours and subscriptions work, and how hours can actually be forfeited!

For me personally, Preply was amazing and really helped me learn another language cheaply. Personally, without the low prices I believe that I wouldn't be able to speak as well as I can now. Basically, the subscription works on a monthly basis so, you buy enough lessons once a month to have between 1-5 lessons per week, e.g., if you wanted to have one lesson per week, you would have to buy the minimum monthly subscription and pay for 4 lessons up front.

If you get really busy and don't manage to use these lessons all up because you have to cancel, I believe that the extra lessons that you have will roll over into the first week of the next month. So your lessons last 5 weeks at most, then they will be lost (not able to use them anymore, but you still have to pay). This has never happened to me, because if you have to cancel a lesson, you can always reschedule it or the tutor can reschedule it for you! So just try to be as organised as you can and track when your hours expire if you missed a lesson or two for that month. If you weren't able to use a lesson for example, you can have 2 lessons the following week so that you use these all up!

Also, I only have really good things to say about Preply from a student perspective. During December of 2023 I accidentally bought 8 lessons, and being the last month of the year, and the fact that I was going abroad for January, I was too busy to even have more than 2 lessons or consider rolling them onto next month. So I needed to get a full refund.

I emailed the Preply support team and they were so prompt, I told them about my situation (travelling, busy December etc.) and they instantly refunded all my lessons to me, no questions asked. The support team are really amazing, and if you have any issues you can go to them, and they will try their absolute best to help you.

Also, with the trial lessons, yes unfortunately Preply takes 100% of the lesson. So we teach for free for 25-50 minutes. It is not ideal haha, but I believe that it is fair for me personally. I have no prior experience in teaching so it would be impossible for me to get students in real life (that would pay 30-45 dollars) which I would want one day, with the experience. So Preply is great in that you don't need prior experience! Secondly, Preply pay and do a LOT of advertising. They push your profile and advertise it without you needing to market or do anything. This is invaluable and saves me a lot of time. Also, you set your own rates, and as you teach more (200+ hours) the commission drops in increments. It starts off at 33% for 0-20 hours of teaching, then goes to 28%, then 23% after 200 hours, so a few months. So trust me, I believe most of the teachers on Preply understand and still think that it is worth it. So don't feel too bad!

100% trial lessons are also great for students in that if your first tutor is really bad, or isn't a right match, and you do the trial lesson with them, you can refund this and use this money for another tutor, instead of paying again for another tutor! I would say that if you have to do this, it can be a bit bad for the tutor because of things that I don't have enough time to go into haha, but if you didn't think the first tutor was a match and want to refund, but it was just because the tutor just wasn't for you, not that they were horrible, I would recommend leaving a nice review for them (5 stars!!!) with compliments. This would definitely help out this tutor, especially tutors who are new and with no reviews, as this boosts their profile and helps them get more students!! But this is up to you hehe.

I believe this system does work more in favour of the students than the teachers, but there are wins on both sides.
