I don't understand why we call this sports activity table tennis before, why so similar name to tennis? I suddenly realize that's so easy, the former is for two people to play a ball on a table, and the latter is on the ground.

Table tennis is so populous across China that nearly the poorest schools have set up tables for table tennis.
At first I doidn't understand why we call this sports activity table tennis before, why so. Why such a similar name to tennis?
