White Christmas
“When I passed through the tunnel, there was a snowy country.” is the opening line of a famous novel by Yasunari Kawabata.
As he said, I was tempted to say that “When I opened curtains, there was a snowy country.”
When I got up this morning, it snowed 15cm (about 6 inches) hight.
I was surprised because the roads around our house and the roofs of my neighbor's houses were all white.
It was white Christmas.

You don’t put a period at the end of the quote unless you are starting a new sentence. For example you could also say:

As In the saidme way, I was tempted to say that “When I opened the curtains, there was a snowy country.”
In the same way, I was tempted to say “When I opened the curtains, there was a snowy country.”
Another way to say this would be:
