Ex-Director of VW to Become the New CEO of Renault

French automotive giant Renault appointed Luca De Meo, a former CEO of Seat, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, as the new CEO. Withthehis experience of working for Toyota in the past, De Meo was considered as suitable for strengthening ties with Nissan and Mitsubishi.
Since De Meo had a non-compete agreement with Volkswagen preventing him from accepting positions at competitive companies for a certain period, his starting date at Renault is set to July 1st. Clotilde Delbos, current CFO of Renault will be temporarily doubling as the CEO until then and will take the post of the vice-CEO afterward.

Renault’s director, Jean-Dominique Senard, commented “this is a significant event for Renault and Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. In a drastically changing automotive market, we believe Mr. De Meo will bring up strong strategies and a wider prospect”.
De Meo is originally from Milan. He has worked in Renault, Toyota Europe and Fiat (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) in the past. Later in 2009, he joined Volkswagen as the head of the marketing department. In 2015, he had taken the post of the head of a Spanish popular car brand, Seat, which at that time was undergoing a negative performance.
De Meo introduced (reconsideration?review? reevaluation? reassessment?) of SUVs and EVs and re-established the brand back on its tires. He has extensive knowledge of the European automotive market as well as completely fluent in French. Although it was estimated that Renault’s main stockholder, the French government, would insist on appointing a French person to the position, eventually, the selection was approved.
After the resignation of Carlos Ghosn, Renault’s former director and CEO, Renault appointed Thierry Bolloré as CEO in January 2019. However, Bollore’s management methods didn’t receive positive feedback, resulting in his removal from the post the same year in October.
Seat announced the resignation of De Meo on the 7th. This announcement was anticipated to be an advanced plan for the acceptance of the CEO position at Renault.
