Sweet Potatoes' Life

I was born and raised in a small village and people in my village do farmwork to make a living, so I know how to plant sweet potatoes.

In the early spring, people choose the best sweet potatoes to cultivate sweet potato sprouts. They dig a square shallow pit and place the best sweet potatoes in the pit evenly. Under the sweet potatoes is organic fertilizer. Then they cover the pit with a piece of plastic film and wait for the sweet potatoes to sprout.

When the sprouts are well-grown, they cut them off the sweet potatoes and transplant them into the fields that are well-prepared. The following steps are field management, such as fertilizing and weeding.

A very important step is to turn over the sweet potato vines regularly in summer. In this period, the vines grow rapidly and it's very easy for them to take roots and affect the tuber growth.

The harvest season for sweet potatoes where I live is usually at the end of September or the beginning of October. Before harvesting the sweet potatoes, people need to cut off the sweet potato vines first, then plow the sweet potatoes out of the fields.

After people harvest the sweet potatoes, they have the following ways to deal with them: sell them, store them, make starch from them, and eat them. Of course, they will choose the high-quality sweet potatoes as the "mother" sweet potatoes for the next year.

Sweet Potatoes' Life

I was born and raised in a small village andwhere people in my village do farmwork to make a living, so I know how to plant sweet potatoes.

(1) I slightly restructured the sentence so "village" isn't repeated twice in such close proximity.
(2) Alternatively, instead of "do farmwork to make a living", you can also say "do farmwork for a living".

In the early spring, people choose the best sweet potatoes to cultivate sweet potato sprouts.

They dig a square shallowhallow square pit and place the best sweet potatoes in the pitside evenly.

(1) English adjectives actually follow a particular order. Knowing what that order is will have to come through experience. Here, "square shallow pit" sounds quite unnatural.
(2) I replaced "in the pit" with "inside" to avoid repeating the word "pit".

Under the sweet potatoes is organic fertilizer.

Then they cover the pit with a piece of plastic film and wait for the sweet potatoes to sprout.

When the sprouts are well-grown, theyhave grown sufficiently, the farmers cut them off the sweet potatoes and transplant them into the fields that are well-prepared fields.

(1) "Well-grown" means "healthy", but you were likely referring to the stage of growth instead.
(2) I would restate the subject ("the farmers") here, as it has been a while since you last did.
(3) I would shift "well-prepared" forward to make the sentence more concise.

The following steps are field management, such as fertilizing and weeding.

A very important step is to turn over the sweet potato vines regularly in summer.

In this period, the vines grow rapidly and it's very easy for them to [take roots]? and affect the tuber growth.

I'm not certain what "take roots" means in this context. Perhaps you can supply the Chinese translation.

The harvest season for sweet potatoes where I live is usually at the end of September or the beginning of October.

Before harvesting the sweet potatoes, people need to cut off the sweet potato vines first, then plow the sweet potatoes out of the fields.

After people harvest the sweet potatoes, they have the following ways to deal with them: sell them, store them, make starch from them, andor eat them.

More concisely: "After people harvest the sweet potatoes, they can either sell them, store them, make starch from them, or eat them."

Of course, they will choose the high-quality sweet potatoes as the "mother" sweet potatoes for the next year.

When I say "take root", I mean that sweet potato vines will take root on the ground. Sweet potato vines are very long and grow close to the ground, so they will take root on the ground if people don't turn them over regularly. The vines taking root will compete for nutrients, which will seriously affect the growth of the sweet potatoes.
Thank you very much for the corrections and the detailed explanations.

I see. In that case, perhaps it might be clearer to say "In this period, the vines grow rapidly and it's very easy for them to grow roots and affect the tuber growth."

I was not aware of this behaviour. Thank for enlightening me.
