To learn something new we have to explain our brain why we need this knowledge, create necessity to consume that knowledge.
This is reason why when we learn foreign languages we should pretest us. Firstly to encounter with unknown and after uncover it.
Stop just learning words in anki, find friends in a target language and you will learn a desired language in no time.

so just a "to" seemed to work to connect it back to "we have to".

I got a Japanese penpal early on in my studies of Japanese and we became friends very quickly, but the struggle to properly convey my thoughts was agonizing. This motivated me to improve as quickly as I could. I really agree with your advice here.
