Today's topic of online English class was solo assignments called "tanshin funin" in Japanese. Some Japanese employees are forced to transfer to the countryside alone against their will. To make the matter worse, it is likely to happen to middle-aged men who have bought their houses in the city and decided their children's school. It must be the next worst trait of Japanese firms after overwork which may result in death. From a management point of view, solo assignments are plausible decision to fill in the gaps in workplace or have their staff acquire a variety of skills.
Now that teleworking enables the employees to work in distant places, they don't need to be apart from their family any more. In addition, it is much harder to live in the rural area than it used to because Japan's population has been shrinking and gathering at the capital, Tokyo. Needless to say, students today who was born and raised up in the city are reluctant to apply for companies which compel them to work in the country. Japanese society reaches the point where the companies should change their culture or their way of hiring.
