Slow to Read

I like reading books.
I sometimes think I might be a reading addict.
But I can’t read fast.
When I went to a manga cafe, where you can enjoy food and drinks, read comics etc, with my sister, we were there about an hour.
During that time, my sister read about 6 comics, but I could only read a book.
I know the reason why I read comics slow.
Because I don't just read the text, I look at pictures in every detail.
During I read, I think like “How wonderful line it is! How the author draw it?” “This composition is amazing!” “The author is too talented to draw such expressions” etc.

But even novels are slow.
I lent my sister a novel that took me about 6 hours to read, and she read it in about an hour.
Did she really understand what the story was talking about? I thought.
Anyway, I think it's good if you read books quickly because you can read a lot of it, and it's also good if you read it slowly because you can enjoy it for a long time.

Although "a" before a noun indicates that it is singular, it doesn't have the same function as "one".

Interesting! I tend to be a fast reader, I think, but I agree that its good to mull over and think about what you've read. Good writing!

添削してくれてありがとうございます。
ちょっと質問なのですが、この場合、an hour → 1 hour
とした方がよいでしょうか? それとも時間の場合は an hour の方が自然でしょうか?

はい、そうです。最初に読んだ時気づいていないみたいでした。日本でどうやって説明するかはわかりませんので、英語で説明します。英語の説明がわかりにくい場合、ぜひ言ってください。できるだけ日本語で説明します。

If you write in arabic numerals throughout the passage, use that consistently throughout. So here, it would be: "I lent my sister a novel that took me about 6 hours to read, but she read it in about 1 hour."

However, if you write the numerals in words, (one, two, three, etc.) then stick with that throughout. So here, it would be: "I lent my sister a novel that took me about six hours to read, but she read it in about an hour." This style of writing is usually used in more fomal, academic writing. For something in college, for example, I would not write using arabic numerals as that is (somewhat) against the rules.

Thank you for your telling me.
In this case, can I use "one hour" instead of "an hour"?

Thank you for your telling me. In this case, can I use "one hour" instead of "an hour"? It would be: "I lent my sister a novel that took me about six hours to read, but she read it in about one hour."

Both are okay, but I would personally choose 'one' to stick with the pattern of numbers. But if you write the sentence this way, then the previous one ("During that time, my sister read about 6 comics, but I could only read 1 book/comic.") should also use words instead of numerals. So:

During that time, my sister read about six comics, but I could only read one/a book/comic.

AND

I lent my sister a novel that took me about six hours to read, but she read it in about one/an hour.

The important things is to stick with the same style. So, if you are doing numerals then write both the sentences like so:

During that time, my sister read about 6 comics, but I could only read 1 book/comic.

AND

I lent my sister a novel that took me about 6 hours to read, but she read it in about 1 hour.

If you want to use a/an to represent '1' in a sentence, then I would say it's best to use it in a sentence with no other numbers. For example:

I lent my sister a novel, and she read it in about an hour. (This is better to use 'an' since there are no other numbers in the sentence).

VS

I letn my sister a novel that took me about six hours to read, but she read it in about one/an hour. (I would choose 'one' over here since there is 'six' earlier in the sentence).

I hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything unclear!
