I have always believed that humans need 8 hours of sleep every day. However, I don’t know who told me that or why I believe it—it’s just common sense that’s been stuck in my head since I was a child. Some people can get by with fewer hours of sleep, like my mom, who only sleeps four to five hours and feels fine. For me, 8 hours of sleep makes me feel less tired during the workday, but I usually only sleep for 6 hours because there are so many things I want to do after work.
I’ve heard the term “sleep debt,” which means if you need 8 hours of sleep but only get 6, you "owe" your body 2 hours of sleep. After accumulating this sleep debt, we often try to sleep longer on weekends, but sometimes this makes things worse because it messes up our sleep schedule.

This is my first time hearing of this term, but in a seminar, I heard you can sleep for let's say 6 hours in the night, then, during the day if you have time to sleep, you can sleep for 2 hours to pay for this debt.
Nice write up 👏👏💪🏾

“Day” seems fine to me, because some people work at night and sleep in the daytime.

“Common sense” doesn’t sound natural to me here, but I have no trouble understanding what you mean.

I’m finding that the older I get, the less sleep I need.
