Shodoshima Island Trip Plan Part 3

This summer, I'll be taking some friends from other countries to Shodoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. I want to be able to tell them about the island.

[Sinpaku tree in Hoshoin]
There is one of the 88 sacred places for pilgrimage. Its name is Hoshoin that is No. 54 sacred place. The biggest Sinpaku tree in Japan is located there. Sinpaku is generally used for a miniature potted tree. But the Sinpaku in Hoshoin is 20m in height and the tree roots expand 16m in diameter. The age of this tree is estimated to be around 1600 years old. It was designated as a special natural treasure in 1955 and is famous as a place with spiritual energy. The surface on the tree trunk and branches is so quite lumpy that you may see some parts like a dragon head, beast, human's brain and so on. How they are seen dependes on the person and the angle. You could feel a solemn and mysterious atmosphere from the tree.

[Old town with labyrinth]
In old times, pirates were infested in the Seto Inland Sea. People in the island made a labyrinth in the town to protect their families from pirates. The intricate streets retain the old time's atmosphere.

[Terraced rice fields in Nakayama]
There is a village called Nakayama. It is famous for terraced rice fields. More than 750 fields expand step-like and you could see all the beautiful scenery laid out before your eyes.
