Roasting sweet potatoes

An interesting thing when I was a child in the countryside was roasting sweet potatoes on farmland. It was about late October, and the sweet potato harvest season has finished. But there were still some of them remaining in the farmland and we fellow kids regularly carried a basket and a shovel to dig them out. After we got a few of them, we roasted them on the farmland. First off, we dug a small ditch, then put the sweet potatoes over the ditch. Last, we lit the crops seedlings and put them into the ditch to burn the sweet potatoes. When we considered them that was almost done, we pushed them down to the ditch and covered them with the mud which dug from the ditch. After keeping this situation for thirty minutes or so, it was ready to eat. Sweet potatoes roasting in this way tasted very delicious. Have you ever eaten this kind of roasting sweet potatoes?

"fields" is what a native speaker would say. Farmland is not ... an error, but it does not sound native.

After we got a few of them, we roasted them oin the farmlanield.

First off, we dug a small ditch, then put the sweet potatoes over the ditch.

LastThen, we lit the crops seedlingsdried vines left after the harvest and put them into the ditch to burncook the sweet potatoes.

"seedlings" is for baby plants, like in springtime. There are not seedlings in October. I think you mean the dead vines from the sweet potatoes that were in the fields? "burn the sweet potatoes" is "light them on fire". It is usually a cooking mistake. "Cook" is "add heat to make food".

When we considered them that was almostnearly done, we pushed them down sweet potatoes down into to the ditch and covered them with the mud which dug from we had dug to make the ditch.

Good work! I could understand what you were trying to tell me and this was not an easy thing to explain. I have eaten roasted sweet potatoes, but only cooked in an oven, not field-roasted like this.

Thank you for your corrections, explanations and comments. Thank you very much. But could you tell me why it’s roasted but roasting? Thanks again.

A "roasting potato" is not finished cooking. It is either raw (here, 'roasting' tells about the type of potato -- a potato FOR roasting) or it is in the middle of cooking.

A "roasted potato" is finished cooking. It is fully cooked by roasting and is now ready to eat.

I am sorry that I cannot explain this better. Here are some examples:

I bought some small, red-skinned roasting potatoes. ("roasting" tells what kind of potato, these potatoes are raw)

The roasting potatoes smell good. ("roasting" tells what the potatoes are doing -- they are in the oven being cooked RIGHT NOW. They are not done yet.)

These are delicious roasted potatoes. ("roasted" means these are fully cooked potatoes that have been cooked by roasting. You can eat them now.)
