Chess

In Taiwan, at least in my generation, most of us know how to play Gomoku (five in a row) and Go, while fewer know how to play Chinese chess (Xiangqi). Poker and Mahjong are also popular. As for me, I know the rules of most of these games but rarely play. Part of the reason is that I am an only child, so nobody taught me how to play them until I went to school.

I thought about learning chess when I was a teenager, probably because of some TV show that made me think playing chess would make me look smarter. I remember buying a book. Chess is not very common in Taiwan, so chess books are quite rare in our local bookstore. They had to order the book for me. However, in the end, I still couldn’t memorize the rules, let alone actually play chess.

Did your parents ever play games with you? My parents taught my sister and me quite a few games, but chess wasn’t one of them as neither of them played it themselves.

I remember buying a book. I remember buying a book.

Maybe combine these next few sentences: "I decided to buy a book, but chess is not very common in Taiwan, and chess books are quite rare in our local bookstore, so they had to order one for me."

I remember buying a book. I remember buying a book.

I would probably say "I remember I even bought a book." But what you wrote is fine.

Chess is not very common in Taiwan, so chess books are quite rare in our local bookstore.

I would either say "our local bookstoreS", or "MY local bookstore", but this is me being very fussy.

They had to order the book for me.
