Board game club

Today, I visited a meeting of an English board game club in a library here in Moscow. Such meetings are hold only once or twice a month, and so I thought that it would be a great way to spend my afternoon. This time, there were five or six board games and around 20 participants. The whole event lasted for a bit more than two hours, and I had a lot of fun. To put the cherry on the top of this evening, I went to dine at a Vietnamese restaurant nearby. The food portions were, as always, plentiful, and the prices were rather reasonable. What a nice Saturday I had!

Either was is fine, but you’ve already got the verb ‘were’ in the same sentence. This way sounds a little more posh.
