I agree with your reasons why people lie. I think that people lie out of safety too. As a woman who solo travels, it's dangerous to tell people abroad that you're solo traveling. Sadly, it's easier to be taken advantaged of if you're a female solo traveler compared to if you're a woman traveling with other people.
