We, and people around us, still tend to put much value on reading as a heavy burden. That is because we assert reading, which requires us some effort, must be more valuable than watching TV.

Your grammar is fine, but "as a heavy burden" feels out of place here. I can't think of anything better to replace it with, and it gets explained in the next sentence anyway, so I would just remove it completely.
