Book - A Shot in the Dark - P18

Part eighteen.
While constable Twitten waits for Crystal to turn up at the theatre, he starts going through* his first day at the Brighton Constabulary. All of his first days at other constabularies** followed the same dull routine: he would find his way to the canteen, he would meet his senior officers and so on. Here things have turned out strikingly different. First, Steine told him to pack his things and leave at once, and then he treated him to a ticket to one of the most talked-about play openings of the decade. Things have sort of evened out, in Twitten’s view. When Crystal arrives, Twitten immediately introduces himself and apologises on behalf of Inspector Steine. True to form, Crystal is at first outraged at Steine’s rudeness in sending a deputy, but he soon regains his composure. Twitten’s traits have put him at ease***: polite, knowledgeable and eager to learn from an expert. Moreover, they find a common interest in the “Aldersgate Stick-up”. Twitten is extremely keen to get the most out him, as an eye-witness, in order to deepen his understanding of the matter. Thus, they discuss only about that and nothing else before the play starts.

First, Steine told him to pack his things and leave at once, and then he treatedgave him to a ticket to one of the most talked-about play openings of the decade.

He told him to leave then gave him a ticket to a play? Sounds a bit contradictory!

'extremely keen' sounds strange, 'keen' would suffice!

Thus, they discuss only about that and nothing else before the play starts.
