Question

“if I couldn't pass the exam the first time, (then) those 3 years would have been a waste”

What is the difference would be if I changed “would have been” in the above sentence to “would be”?

Thank you guys very much.

Feedback

The difference is very minor. I would think it is the tone of it. If you change it, it sounds like a matter of fact kind of statement. But with the original statement, there is a sad emotion attached to it. It is as though the speaker regrets it.
