I would like to talk about a renowned comedian and actor named Hoai Linh. He is about over 50 years old, and I have seen and enjoyed his acting since I could understand what was happening in television programs, probably at the age of 4. Even now, he still retains his popularity. I think there is no one in Vietnam that doesn’t know his name; my youngest relative Tin, who is 6 years old, loves watching his comedies on YouTube. He has about more than 10 million followers on Facebook.
He is known for his ability to speak various Vietnam dialects, and for his ability to perfectly act as a woman. His role as a middle-aged woman in a movie called Love Western Girl has created such a lasting impression on people that his fans sometimes refer to him by the character’s name – aunt Ba.
Despite his popularity, he leads a frugal life. From his social media posts and videos on his YouTube channel, he is mostly seen in a brown loose-fitting blouse – which is commonly worn by old people in the south of Vietnam, namely Ao Ba Ba - taking care of his garden.
However, he has been heavily criticized by the public recently for a scandal of faulty charity fund disbursement. In October 2020, Hoai Linh called on the public to help the victims of a devastating flood in the central region by sending money to his bank account. He received about 600,000 dollars and promised that he would send this fund to the victims as soon as possible. However, after half a year, he did not fulfill his promise and kept silent about it until being questioned by a local businesswoman. This caused rage among the public because many people accused him of embezzling the donation money. I was totally surprised and disappointed by the news as I could not think of any reason that could justify his action. But he is now back in the industry after two years of hiatus.
