Communication problem

I am a native English speaker in my 40s with two university degrees and I have never heard many of these expressions before. They seem like obscure slang to me.

Sorry for confusing you, I didn't mean it.
What I mean is wrote a situation where people from different social groups, in my case aristocrat Montague and worker from East End of London Tom, try to communicate in their own dialects, and, as expected, hardly understand each other.
Montague speaks by using more sophisticated, rather posh words, and Tom speaks in cockney rhyming slang.
Dicky Bird - word
Barney Rubble - trouble
Ball of Chalk - walk
Boat Race - face
Sky Rocket - pocket

So, in this context 'penchant for being blotto' is still incorrect?

Well, if I were to substitute "drunk" or one of the slang words one hears for "drunk" here in North America (such as pissed, wasted, plastered, etc.), it would sound okay. Perhaps "a penchant for getting drunk/pissed/wasted" would be more natural. I must say, however, that it seems odd to juxtapose words like penchant and purloin, which are not everyday words but rather words that normally belong to a more elevated register, with words that are extremely slangy. Do you know about the linguistic concept of "register"? ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Register_(sociolinguistics) ) Usually one does not mix expressions from widely disparate registers.

From a linguistic point of view you are right, but just imagine,for a moment, what if that situation took place at night somewhere on the streets of East London borough in the late '80s.
