Writing Practice
1) hammer sth home; sth is hammered home
The most painful lesson that has been repeatedly hammered home recently is that English learning solely by reading without writing causes me to hit the bottleneck where my ability is unable to match my aspiration.
2) horrendous pain
Two of my friends have experienced horrendous pain from knee injuries and are now rehabilitating from their surgeries.
3) it is a kick to; pick one’s brain about
Sometimes I ask questions on forums to pick net friends’ brains about language learning or computer programming. It is a kick to communicate with people who have similar interests and would love to enlighten me. I’m very appreciative of them for their warmth and friendliness.
4) summon up the courage; between a rock and a hard place
At some point of his life, he summoned up the courage to try to turn over a new leaf by ridding of his drab life and chasing his distant dream, but somehow made halfhearted attempts. Being so broke now, he can’t even afford to pay his rent. So he is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He either goes all out to continue the new life or retreats to his old life.
Thanks in advance for helping correct my sentences.

"hammered home" implies something is happening over and over again, so no need for "repeatedly".
"hit the bottleneck" is awkward here, it's usually used for situations where something is flowing but slows down due to an obstruction (such as traffic, liquid, etc.)
