I watched the press conference of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on YouTube today. It was hard to understand the conference. The content of the research was difficult, but my English listening skills were too weak. I want to improve my English listening skills.

It was hard to understand the conference.
The content of the research was difficult, but the real problem was that my English listening skills were too weak.
"but" is a phrase which means the next sentence should contrast with the previous statement. Your original sentence: 「研究内容も難しかったのですが、私の英語のリスリング力がなさすぎます。」 uses が, which does translate to "but" in English. However the problem is that English tends to be more explicit, and cannot rely on implications as much as Japanese. That is why I added "but the real problem" to your sentence, to make it clear what the contrast is between the two halves of the sentence.
