Last night I stumbled on a TV program that features Iga city, the birthplace of Ninja.
Today I want to share about Ninja, but the story is a bit long so I divide it into two posts.
Iga is located in Mie prefecture. I didn't know that Ninja originated from farmers who had fought with each other to get farmland. Iga is surrounded by mountains, and lands suitable for agriculture are few. Those farmers were getting accustomed to fighting with each other customizing farm tools like weapons to get farmlands.
Futhermore, these mountains around Iga are very steep and rough, so many followers of Buddhism and Shintoism from all over Japan used to enter the mountains to train themselves by enduring ascetic practices there. This is one of these religious customs. Iga's farmers knew the mountains' details and guided these followers, then they practiced together. These practices gave the farmers some knowledge like how to use fire and trained themselves to fight at battles.
To be continued in the second half.

Interesting, I didn't know that Ninjas originated from ascetic practices! I am interested to see how they become the Ninjas we know today in the second half.
