Unfortunately, the new year didn't start so well for me. However, I can only hope for the rest of the year to be better. I don't think we can say that something is good or bad. There's always a bit of both. I'll try to be more positive and look for the good in situations where there's more bad.

However, I can only hope for the rest of the year to be better.
"However" implies some kind of counter-point to a previous argument; I don't feel it belongs here.
Personally, I would say "I can only hope that the rest of the year is better."
I don't think we can definitively say that something is either good or bad.
There's always a bit of both.
I'll try to be more positive and look for the good in bad situations where there's more bad.
